Teen Misconceptions About Designated Drivers

Teen Misconceptions About Designated Drivers- Mike Leonard InsuranceTeenagers with easy access to alcohol and the keys to a vehicle is a deadly combination, and the situation is even worse because of the attitude that most teens have about driving while impaired.

Most teens think that it’s perfectly acceptable for one of their friends to be the designated driver and still have a few alcoholic beverages as long as they’re not falling down drunk.

And that’s an attitude that concerns Liberty Mutual’s David Melton. Melton is the administrative director of global safety for Liberty and he wants to call attention to the attitude that young teen drivers have toward driving while under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.

In a study dated back in 2012, over 10,000 fatalities occurred due to teens driving drunk, and this represented 31% of all accidents that happened in that year.

A 2013 study revealed that even designated drivers, people who were responsible for driving their friends safely to other destinations, consumed alcohol as well, and this figure revealed an alarming of 40% of these drivers consumed some type of alcoholic beverage.

The problem is that even with a blood alcohol level below the .08 level that is considered to be driving impaired, were responsible for at least 5% of all traffic fatalities as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
