Summer vacation is almost here. Heading out of town? Relax while you’re away knowing that your home is safe and secure. Check out these anti-burglary tips to keep your home well protected while you’re on vacation.
Lock the Doors.
As you set out on your trip, lock up the house. Check that all your doors and windows are shut closed and locked, including deadbolts. Additionally, you may want to put a wood stick in the door track of any sliding patio doors for extra security.
Leave the Lights on.
A well-lit home indicates that someone is home. Set few lamps and your porch lights on a timer so that they’ll still come on even when you’re not home. While some light is better than no light, try to avoid leaving your lights on 24/7. Having your lights on at three o’clock in the morning looks suspicious.
Invest in a Security System.
A security system can alert the authorities that foul play has occurred at your home while you’re away. It helps to add an extra pair of eyes to keep your home secure. Can’t afford a security system? Put a security sticker in the window. A burglar has a 50/50 chance that it’s really, and most burglars won’t take that chance.
Talk to your Neighbors.
Make friends with your neighbors and let them know when you’re going out of town. They can keep watch for any suspicious activity while you’re gone.
Hold your Mail.
If you’re going out of town for more than a couple days, call the post office to put a hold on your mail. Otherwise, an overstuffed mailbox indicates that no one is home. Play it safe and pick it up when you get back.
