Are You Guilty Of These Driving Sins?

We would all like to believe that people are as thoughtful as they can be. If, however, you have ever been cut in the grocery store, stepped in discarded gum on the sidewalk, or been bothered by a person texting during a movie, you know that is unfortunately not the case. It can be tempting to get angry, until you take a look at yourself and your own behaviors.

The same is unfortunately true of driving. While we would like to believe we are all careful while driving multi-ton metal boxes around at 65 miles an hour, the fact is we can start to feel careless because driving is such a regular activity. To sober us all up and remind us of the importance of driving carefully because April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we want to highlight the following statistics.

  • While only 30 percent of drivers admit to texting and driving, 75 percent of people say they have seen other drivers text behind the wheel.
  • 51 percent of drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 text while driving.
  • 30 percent of drivers say they have applied makeup while driving, and 15 percent admit they have styled their hair while in the driver’s seat.
  • 28 percent of drivers say that they have talked on the phone while driving but do not believe it is distracting. In fact, studies show that even hands-free calling is dangerous because it distracts your brain from the road ahead.
