Imagine driving on the freeway, surrounded by a huge number of other cars when your own vehicle experiences a tire blowout. This can be a frightening experience, but if you are well prepared in advance, you will be better able to safely handle a tire blowout.
A tire blowout occurs when the tire suddenly loses its air pressure, and this can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
Your primary goal during a tire blowout, according the United States government’s Safercar website, is to keep your car controllable and balanced. Avoid panicking. If you over-react and suddenly slam on the brakes or take your foot off of the accelerator, you could spin out of control.
Do not hit your brakes, despite your initial instincts to do so. Also, do not release your foot from the accelerator. Instead, remain calm and gradually release your accelerator. Correct your steering as needed to get back in control. Simply look where you want to go and then steer toward that direction.
After stabilizing your car, continue slowing down and then pull over at the side of the road when it is safe.
