How You Can Protect Your Garden from Winter Storms

Take these precautions to protect your home garden this winter.

If you are trying to cultivate a garden, then harsh winter weather conditions can put a damper on your plans.  Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take to shield your garden from cold temperatures, wet weather, and high winds.  Here are some of the precautions you should take to protect your home garden this winter.

1) Choosing the Right Plants

When planning your garden, you need to choose the plants you put into your garden wisely.  Before you begin planting, refer to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to see which plants will do the best in your particular climate.  By planting zone-friendly vegetation, you can improve the chances of your garden making it through winter unscathed.

2) Shield Plants

If you are expected to experience heavy rains, hail, snow, or wind, then you should make an effort to shield your smaller plants from the onslaught.  Take planter pots, baskets, or other large containers and turn them over your plants to act as a barrier between the weather and your vegetation.  If you want to protect a wider area, then drive stakes into the corners of your garden and drape tarps over them to shield your garden from the elements.

3) Anchor New Trees

If you have young or recently planted trees or shrubs in your front yard or garden, then use stakes to keep them in place during a fierce winter storm. Pound stakes about two feet into the soil, and angle them away from your tree. Then, attach your tree or shrug to the stake, leaving enough slack so the tree can bend a few inches or so with the wind. This will ensure that your young trees or shrubs are not torn out of the ground when faced with extreme weather.
