Information You Need After an Accident

If you are involved in a car accident, it can leave you shaken up, confused and startled. Having a checklist of things that you should collect can help make the entire process go more smoothly. Start by taking pictures of the damage to all of the vehicles involved. Whenever possible, document the overall scene as well. If there are skid marks or other visible evidence, pictures of these things can be valuable. You can use the camera on your cell phone, or keep a small disposable camera in your glove box for just this purpose.

Along with pictures of the scene, you need to exchange information with the other drivers. Names, addresses and insurance details are the best place to start. Get policy numbers and company information for each insurance policy. If there are any witnesses, get contact information for them, because you may need it if there are any legal questions. Video recorded statements of the person at fault is highly recommended.   If the police and fire departments are called, make note of badge numbers and names for any individuals who respond.
