Be mindful of your health during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month!
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month! Save a life and raise awareness about the disease. The more you know, the better able you are to help stop the disease. Protect the women that you love and check out what you need to know about ovarian cancer.
What is ovarian cancer?
Like any cancer, ovarian cancer is characterized by the abnormal growth of cells. These abnormal cells grow into a tumor on or near the ovaries, which can spread throughout the body.
What are the symptoms of the disease?
Symptoms of ovarian cancer are hard to detect as they’re similar to common ailments. Symptoms of the cancer include bloating, abdominal pain, an urge to urinate frequently, fatigue, changes in appetite, digestive issues, back pain, and changes in your menstrual cycle. If you notice persistent symptoms, ensure that you consult with your doctor. The earlier the disease is caught, the better your chances of survival.
Who is at risk for ovarian cancer?
All women are at risk for ovarian cancer. Women with a genetic predisposition for ovarian, breast, or colon cancer have a greater likelihood of contracting the disease. Additionally, risks increase with age. The older you are, the more likely you are to get the disease. However, infertility is another risk factor for ovarian cancer. While there is no screening for the disease, be vigilant of any persistent symptoms. Keep a watchful eye on your health and the health of those around you.
