Preparing Your Car For The Cold

It’s that time of year again, the weather is getting cooler, leaves are changing and you need to winterize your vehicle. Even if you don’t live in the coldest of climates preparing for cold weather will make sure that you vehicle runs efficiently all year long.

Simple Preparation Steps for Cold Weather

  • Check all of your fluids. This includes your oil, antifreeze and water. You may want to switch to a thinner oil during the colder months. As long as you follow the recommendations for oil viscosity in the colder months that’s provided in your owners manual you should be good to go.
  • Check your battery. Older batteries are more likely to die out in a snap of cold weather. Make sure to check the batteries positive and negative terminals for rust or corrosion. If your battery is getting older it may be a good idea to replace it before the cold settles in.
  • Check the vehicle’s exterior as well. Take a look at your windshield wipers and exterior lights to make sure they’ll last through the autumn and winter seasons. If need be replace old wipers and any burnt out bulbs. You should also make sure all exterior light coverings are cleaned for better visibility.
