What to Do After a Hit-and-Run

Here are the steps you should take after being involved in a hit-and-run accident.

An accident is considered a hit-and-run anytime an involved driver flees the scene of the accident.  Oftentimes, this situation unfolds so quickly that you do not have the opportunity to react.  If you ever find yourself the victim of a hit-and-run, here are some of the things you should do to handle the situation,

Don’t Chase the Other Driver

While it’s tempting, it’s important that you do not chase after the driver who flees the scene of the accident.  In your pursuit, you are likely to drive recklessly, placing yourself, your passengers, and other innocent parties at risk.  Additionally, the fleeing driver might be dangerous, and they could react aggressively when they realize that you are chasing them down.  Instead of trying to follow the other driver, you should pull off the road and assess the situation.

Try to Recall Any Details

After a hit-and-run, you will likely feel flustered and angry.  However, it’s important that you calm yourself down and try to remember any details about the accident.  For instance, try to recall the color of the other car, the state on its license plate, any physical characteristics of the driver, and so on.  Every detail, no matter how seemingly minor, can actually help your case.

Call the Police

Even if you feel that you have nothing to report, you should still call the police.  At the very least, having an official police report documenting the accident will help you if you file an insurance claim.  When the police arrive at the scene, recount what happened without assigning blame or admitting fault.  Allow the police to determine what happened for themselves.
