What to Do if You Don’t Get a Driver’s Information After a Car Accident

Steps to take if you fail to exchange information with the other driver after a crash.

Getting into a car accident is scary and overwhelming, regardless of the circumstances.  However, things can become even more stressful if you are unable to speak with the other involved party.  So, what happens if you fail to exchange information with the other driver after a crash?  Here are some steps you can take depending on the situation.

If the Driver Refuses to Share Their Information…

Sometimes when you get into an accident, the other driver is hostile and refuses to cooperate.  If they refuse to give you their information, then follow these steps:

  • Remain calm– While the other driver is angry and hostile, it’s important that you do not get caught up in their emotions. Remember that anything you do can be used against you.  If the driver is becoming too belligerent, then return to your vehicle, roll up the windows, lock your doors, and contact the authorities.
  • Call the police– You should always report accidents to the police. However, it’s even more important to do so when the other driver is not cooperating.  The police can intervene and get the information that you are not able to on your own.  Additionally, they can help contain the situation if the other driver starts to get violent and threatens your safety.

If the Accident was a Hit-and-Run…

If you are in an accident and the other driver leaves the scene before you can exchange information, then this is known as a hit-and-run.  The other driver has just committed a felony, which means that your next steps are very important.  Here’s what you should do:

  • Get to a safe location– First, you need to make sure that you get yourself and your passengers to a safe place. This usually means moving off the roadway.  However, do not stray too far from the scene of the accident.
  • Take photos– Once you have moved to a safe location, document your car’s damage by taking photos. Something as seemingly minor as a paint transfer may be enough to track down the runaway driver.
  • Speak to Witnesses– Scan the area and see if anyone saw the accident and would be willing to provide details. These witnesses may have noticed something that you didn’t.  If they are willing, get their contact information so the police and your insurance company can reach them if necessary.
  • Call the police– Again, you need to report all accidents to the police. Hit-and-run accidents should be reported as soon as possible to improve the chances of tracking the driver down.

These are some of the steps that you should take if you fail to exchange information with the other driver after a crash.  Are you looking for more assistance with your auto insurance?
