What to Do If You Pop a Tire While on the Road

Safely handle blowing a tire while you’re driving.

For many drivers, the idea of blowing a tire while they are on the road is a scary scenario, and rightfully so.  If handled incorrectly, then a popped tire can cause you to lose control of your car and get into an accident.  If you ever find yourself in this precarious situation, then stay calm and take these steps to safely handle blowing a tire while you’re driving.

1) Maintain a Firm Grip on the Wheel

When you blow a tire, your car can suddenly swerve.  If you do not have a good grip on your wheel, then this sudden jerk can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.  To prevent this, you should always maintain a firm grip on your steering wheel, especially if you feel the tell-tell signs of popping a tire.

2) Gradually Reduce Your Speed

When you blow a tire, your first reaction might be to slam on the brakes.  However, this can cause your car to skid out of your control.  Rather than administering your brakes, simply take your foot off the accelerator to gradually reduce your speed.  As your car slows, steer yourself over to the side of the road.

3) Pull Over and Alert Other Drivers

When your car slows to about 20 miles per hour, you are safe to apply your brakes.  At this point you should pull off the road and stop your car completely.  Shift your car into park and apply your parking brake.  Before exiting your car to assess the damage, make sure that you turn on your hazard lights.  This will warn other drivers that you are experiencing car trouble and will ensure that they take extra caution while passing by.

4) Repair/Replace Your Tire

Finally, you can repair or change out your damaged tire.  If you do not feel safe or do not know how to do this, then call roadside assistance for backup.
