These suggestions can help you get back on track with your New Year’s resolutions.
A month into the new year, you probably have a good idea how realistic it’s going to be to keep your resolutions through 2016. A little fine-tuning might be necessary to make sure you’ve set goals you can keep, but if you’ve completely fallen off the bandwagon, don’t despair! Use this guide to help yourself actually keep your New Year’s resolutions so when you look back on 2016, you see progress.
Write it down.
Do you know that by January 1, 2017, you want to have lost x pounds, saved x dollars, or cooked x meals? Write it down! Having a tangible record and visual reminder will help you stay motivated. Then, write out smaller, bite-sized goals below each resolution. So, for example, if you wanted to read 12 books this year, write out a month-by-month reading list for yourself.
Get help.
Avoiding temptation to flake out on your resolutions is a lot easier if you know your friend will hassle you later. Conscript someone to help keep you accountable. They’re more likely to stay on top of it if your friend has similar goals, so it’s a good idea to pair up with someone who’s aiming to accomplish the same things as you.
Give yourself some grace.
It’s all too easy to lose focus for a week, feel disheartened, and give up entirely. Don’t fall into that trap! Allow yourself to make mistakes, and celebrate victories – no matter how small! Making life changes isn’t easy. Don’t be harder on yourself than you would be on a friend.
