Cooking Safely This Thanksgiving

Most fires in the home start in the kitchen as a result of cooking gone awry. With the holiday most known for cooking, Thanksgiving, on the horizon, here are some tips to keep your Texas home safe.

First, enact a no-kids zone in the kitchen. The kitchen is where all the action is, so of course it is going to draw the most attention. However, kids running through while hot food is being moved in and out of the oven is just an accident waiting to happen.

Be mindful of flammable items such as potholders, bags, towels or curtains are kept away from hot food and open flame. It is also a good idea to stay in the kitchen while things are cooking so a fire does not have a chance to escalate unattended.

Always double-check all kitchen appliances before you go to bed or leave the house to make sure they are properly shut-off and cooled. You should also test your smoke detectors regularly to ensure proper operation.
