These Hacks Will Help You Cut Your Electricity Bill

Slash your utility budget! Use these tips to cut your electricity bill this month and throughout the year.

In 2016, it’s fairly safe to say that while we could live without electricity, we wouldn’t choose it. Electricity powers the tech we rely on to make our lives easier. We rely on that tech so much that we tend to take it – and the power behind it – for granted. That is, until we get the bill. If you’re frustrated by increasing utility costs as you power more and more devices in your home, try these hacks to cut your electricity bill.

  • Look at your lights. If you’re still using incandescent bulbs, you’re wasting money in more ways than one. The next time a bulb burns out, swap it for an LED of CFL bulb. Not only do they use less energy (shrinking your bill), but they also last longer so you can avoid shelling out for replacements in the near future.
  • Turn down the temp. Did you know that heating water makes up for over 10 percent of your home’s energy consumption? Put a freeze on this usage by turning your water heater down to 120 degrees F instead of the standard 140. This can help you save as much as 10 percent each year!
  • Power down. If you’ve got any tech that keeps a light on even when it’s off or is hooked up to a remote, it still uses power even when it’s “off.” Plug your TV – which could be costing you as much as $150 a year even when powered down – into a power strip and turn the strip off when it’s not in use.
