Are you getting the rest your body needs? Use these tips to get better sleep during the winter months and throughout the year.
Sleep should come easily in the winter. The cold weather makes you want to cozy up in bed, and the short days provide dark rooms ideal for drifting off. If you have trouble sleeping during this time of year, you probably have trouble sleeping – period. We want to help! Use these tips to get better sleep this winter so you can have the rest your body needs.
- Get on a schedule. Your body’s natural circadian rhythm should make it easy for you to fall asleep and wake up – provided you let it function as it should! To get your rhythm back, go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Yes, even on weekends.
- Block out distractions. What keeps you from falling asleep? Maybe it’s noise. Maybe it’s light. Maybe it’s the buzzing of your phone. Cut it out! An eye mask, ear plugs, and your phone’s “do not disturb” mode can all make it possible for you to fall – and stay – asleep.
- Power down. Let your body get tired as the night approaches. This means cutting out caffeine (try green tea if you’re really needing a pick-me-up to get through those last hours of the workday) and avoiding your devices an hour before bed. The backlight of your phone, laptop, and TV stimulates your brain, making it harder for you to nod off.
