Want to actually keep your New Year’s resolutions? Stick to them in the coming year by using these tips.
It’s hard to believe that we’re already a week into 2016, yet here we are! If you created a list of New Year’s resolutions, hopefully you haven’t had any trouble sticking to them – yet. The problem is that over half of people aren’t keeping their resolutions halfway through the year. Don’t be one of them! Here are a few ways to make your New Year’s resolutions stick in the coming year.
- Work on Your Self(-Control). As you work towards self-improvement, you’re going to need to exercise self-discipline. It will be hard, but studies show that the more you do it the easier it gets! A recent study showed that people who regularly practiced self-control (e.g. avoided sweets) had twice as much success kicking serious habits like smoking! Look for little ways to challenge – and ultimately strengthen – your self-control and success will come more easily.
- Start Small. You probably made some major resolutions, but it’s important to break them into manageable and measurable steps. Running a marathon sounds daunting if you’re just getting up the couch, but walking a mile doesn’t! Break your goals up into benchmarks spread throughout the year.
- Cut Yourself Some Slack. There are 365 days in a year, and messing up on one of them shouldn’t leave you feeling like a failure! Allow yourself some grace, and get inspired by remembering all the great things you have done. For example, if you’ve stuck to your resolutions even one day so far this year: kudos!
