Learn to Stay Safe During Fire Prevention Week

Many fires occur during the holiday period that spans Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, which is understandable given all the tasks that compete for people’s attention.

With that in mind, we’d like to point out some useful information with relevance to Fire Prevention Week, which took place from October 6 to October 12, 2013. Here are some important fire safety tips for you to consider implementing:

Never leave your cooking unattended. A fire could break out on your stove while your attention is elsewhere. Use your DVR to record TV shows and remember to turn off the burner if you need to leave the kitchen, even if you only plan on leaving for a few minutes.

Always turn off space heaters when no one will be around to keep an eye on them. A heater can turn into a source of ignition for a home fire, so you should never leave one unattended.

Test all of your home’s smoke detectors. Do this at least twice a year. Many people make a habit of changing the detector’s batteries when they change their clocks during the transition to and from daylight savings time.
